Satguru Baba
Gobind Bhajan Sahib

The fifth guru of Pooj Samadha Ashram, Shikarpur

Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib was born in Shikarpur, Sindh, Pakistan, in 1881, during the early hours of the morning known as Amrit Velā, considered the sacred hours of the day in Hinduism. He was a great saint who dedicated his life to serving God and humanity.

The Birth of a Divine Soul: “Lakheney Laal”

When Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib was born, his parents noticed a mysterious shine on his face. They distributed sweets and congratulated each other on the birth of “Lakheney Laal,” meaning “Lucky Child.” His parents also distributed clothes to the needy and the poor.

The birth of Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib was marked by a divine sign. His father, Dewan Veeru Mal, and mother observed a mysterious shine on his face. In celebration of the birth of “Lakheney Laal” — the Lucky Child — his parents distributed sweets and clothes to the poor and needy. Dewan Veeru Mal, a devoted follower of Samadha Ashram, handed over the newborn baby to Baba Ram Bhajan, the Second Gaddi Nasheen of that time. When the baby cried for the first time, SatGuru Baba Ram Bhajan Sahib remarked,

“Now the baby has cried to inform us that I have come into this world. He is not an ordinary child. He will become not only a great saint but also the successor of Samadha Ashram in the future.”

Dewan Veeru Mal and the Connection to Samadha Ashram

Dewan Veeru Mal, Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib’s father, was a devoted follower of Samadha Ashram. At that time, SatGuru Baba Ram Bhajan Sahib was the second Gaddi Nasheen of the ashram. When Dewan Veeru Mal handed over the newborn baby boy to Baba Ram Bhajan, the baby cried for the first time. Baba Ram Bhajan said,

“Now the baby has cried to inform us of his arrival and to make his presence known in this world. He is not an ordinary child. He will become not only a great saint but also the successor of Samadha Ashram in the future.”

Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib’s Path to Becoming the Fifth Gaddi Nasheen

Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib became the fifth Gaddi Nasheen of Samadha Ashram in 1929. He was known for his calm and quiet demeanor, particularly during Gurbani recitations (the recitation of Sikh scripture). He would recite in such a low voice that even the person standing closest to him, who was showering him with chaur sahib (a whisk made of peacock feathers), could not hear the holy words of the Guru Granth Sahib.

Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib was always immersed in deep devotion to God. He lived a simple life, dedicating himself either to praying to God or to serving the people and devotees who visited Samadha Ashram. It is believed that he had surpassed the three levels of devotion and had reached the fourth level, where there is no distinction between day and night, hot and cold, pride and humility, happiness and sorrow. In this state, everything is perceived as the same, and every moment is uniform.

Celebrating Baba Roop Bhajan Sahib’s Warsi Maha Utsaw & The Sacred Visit of Bhagat Kanwar Ram Sahib

Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib celebrated the anniversary of the third Gaddi Nasheen, SatGuru Baba Roop Bhajan Sahib, every year for one day. On one such occasion, Bhagat Kanwar Ram Sahib came to Samadha Ashram. Upon seeing him, Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib stood up from his place and warmly welcomed him along with his Satsang. Bhagat Sahib blessed the gathering with his popular bhajan “Naaley Alakh Jay Bero Taar Mohin jo” and sang many other bhajans in praise of the Udaseen saints and Samadha Ashram.

At the end of the Satsang, as Bhagat Sahib was leaving Samadha Ashram, he was given a traditional send-off and ashirwad (blessing) by placing a pakhar, a blessed cloth touched by the Guru Granth Sahib, around his shoulders.

Serving Humanity: Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib’s Compassionate Life

Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib was always kind to all, regardless of caste, religion, or social status. He believed in serving humanity selflessly. He would cook food to serve the ailing and community members in need. During Green Sundays, Sain Baba would gather all devotees and guests to serve them bhandara sahib (a free meal). He would also extend his hospitality to anyone who visited the ashram at any time.

Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib lived a simple life, immersed in deep devotion to God. He kept himself occupied by either praying to the Almighty or serving the people and devotees who came to Samadha Ashram. It is believed that Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib transcended the three levels of devotion and reached the fourth level, where distinctions such as day and night, hot and cold, pride and humility, and happiness and sorrow, disappear. At this level, everything is perceived as one, and every moment is experienced as uniform and equal.

Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib was always kind to everyone, regardless of wealth, caste, or religion. He believed in selflessly serving humanity. He would often cook food to serve the ailing and those in need within the community. During Green Sundays, Sain Baba would gather all his devotees and guests to serve them bhandara sahib (a free communal meal). He was also known for extending his hospitality to guests at any time, ensuring that anyone who visited the ashram felt welcomed and cared for.

Staying Back to Serve Humanity

In 1947, when Pakistan gained independence, many saints and sadhus, such as Khat Waro Sain, Airy Waro, Sadhan Wara Sain, and others, chose to migrate to India. However, SatGuru Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib chose to remain in Samadha Ashram, to serve humanity in Shikarpur. Shankar Anand Bharti Sant also stayed back and was under the guidance of Swami Permanand Bharti at that time, who became a companion and supporter of Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib’s efforts.

Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib never believed in miracles or wonders. Instead, he focused on selflessly serving people, regardless of their religion or beliefs. Baba often worked as a gardener at Samadha Ashram, tending to plants with love and care.

The Spiritual Purpose of the Udasin Gaddi

The leadership of Samadha Ashram belongs to the Udasin lineage, which signifies spiritual beings who surrender themselves entirely to God Almighty and do not marry. Their purpose in life is to guide humanity towards self-realization, teach the importance of love, relinquish fear, serve the poor and needy, and care for all living beings, including animals.

A Pivotal Blessing and Historical Legacy

After the partition of India and Pakistan, many Hindus migrated to India. Dewan Thakur Das, the father of Baba Shiv Bhajan Sahib, along with his wife, sought blessings from SatGuru Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib before leaving Pakistan. At that moment, Baba was engrossed in his prayers, with rose petals scattered before him. Baba placed petals in the JHOLI of Dewan Thakur Das and stopped him, saying,

“Do not leave our country; stay in Pakistan with us.”

This decision kept Dewan Thakur Das’s family rooted in Shikarpur, ensuring the birthplace of SatGuru Baba Shiv Bhajan Sahib (the Sixith Gaddi Nasheen) remained intact. This is a reflection of Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib’s commitment to preserving community ties and destiny.

Haq chawan thaa hikro sabhi saad fakir,
Kar sathya budh sundar dhey dil khey dilbar dher,
Pisan thon penjo pahan khey, so dhey munjh sharer,
Sey pariya pan dit peer, jeeke “Dharmoon” sujhan dum khey.
— Sai Dharamdas

Universal Blessings for Humanity

Dewan Thakur Das folded his hands and humbly replied, “I am your servant, and your words are God’s will. I shall do as you say.” Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib, pleased by his devotion, blessed Dewan Thakur Das, assuring him that Samadha Ashram would always support and protect his family.

The blessings of Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib extend to all humanity—not limited by religion, caste, or community. Just like the air that provides life to all without discrimination, his love and compassion embrace everyone universally.

The Selfless Love of Yogis and Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib

Yogis come into this world to bring happiness to humanity. They do not seek their comfort but dedicate themselves to bringing solace to others. Their Dhuni Sahib is a source of healing and resolution for all problems. Despite the hardships they endure, they find inner peace and happiness in their hearts.

Take Sassi, for example. She was blindly and madly in love with Punno. She would traverse mountains just to meet her beloved. When her friends questioned why she would endure such pain on her feet, she would reply that the wandering brought her pleasure, as she cherished the beauty of nature’s landscapes. Similarly, SatGuru Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib was immersed in love for God. He performed all Shewa (service) with his own hands, not only praying to God but also teaching everyone to do the same.

Succession of Leadership at Samadha Ashram

On October 8th, 1951, Sain Baba Sahib prepared to leave this world and officially made a will declaring that Shewa Ram would succeed him as the successor of the Gaddi sahib of Samadha Ashram, taking the name SatGuru Baba Shiv Bhajan Sahib. The stamp vendor, who recorded this decision on the stamp paper, took the consent and signature from SatGuru Baba Shiv Bhajan Sahib. The people present, who knew Baba Shiv Bhajan Sahib, celebrated his appointment with slogans of Jai Jai.

Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib also affirmed that there was no distinction between himself and SatGuru Baba Shiv Bhajan Sahib, echoing the sentiment of a Persian poet’s verses:

“We are the same soul in two different bodies, and there is no difference.”

The Philosophy of Satguru and the Paras Stone

Baba also spoke about the value of a Satguru, saying,

“A Satguru is more precious than a Paras stone. The Paras stone turns iron into gold but does not transform iron into another Paras stone. In contrast, when a Satguru blesses someone, the person becomes like the Satguru, attaining the divine essence.”

The Final Journey to Spiritual Eternity

Soon after these significant events, Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib fell gravely ill. His fever lasted for about 4 to 5 days. Baba Shiv Bhajan Sahib personally brought Dr. Farooqi to care for Baba at Samadha Ashram. At this moment, Sain Baba said:

“Now our boat is ready to leave.”

Pakhi sant sadhu bhey zaat hikri,
Rahan dhein ba te yaran raat hikri,
Hiyar hi wayan ya subho jo sawer.

With these words, Sain Baba left this world, bidding farewell to the mortal realm.

The Farewell and Legacy

The news of his passing spread rapidly across Shikarpur, and the city came to a standstill. The funeral ceremony of Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib was attended by saints, leaders, and community members. Notable figures present included:

  • Swami Harnam Das Udaseen
  • Swami Parmanand Shankar Bharti
  • Swami Arjan Das Masand
  • Bhai Chatru Ram Sahib
  • Satguru Baba Shiv Bhajan Sahib
  • Panchayat Presidents

The ceremony took place at the Sindh Canal Shikarpur, as per SatGuru Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib’s will. Baba embraced the transition from mortal life, moving into the immortal realm beyond the limits of time, where there is neither sun nor moon, only a boundless sky, and an eternal existence.

Annual Homage and Spiritual Continuity

This significant day, according to the Hindu calendar, was Ashtami of the Kut month and corresponded to October 27, 1951, in the English calendar. Since then, every year, saints, devotees, and people from Sindh and India gather at Pooj Samadha Ashram in Shikarpur to pay homage to SatGuru Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib.

It is believed that anyone who prays with complete faith and devotion to Baba Gobind Bhajan Sahib is granted their heartfelt wishes and blessed abundantly.
